India's Minister I.E. Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal honorary guest at the Anuga Opening

Record trade fair with over 7,400 exhibitors from 107 countries

I.E. Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, India's Minister of the Food Processing Industries, summed it up in one sentence: "Nothing is as fundamental and connecting as eating and drinking." India, the partner country of this year's Anuga, is with 1.3 billion inhabitants both one of the biggest producers and at the same time biggest consumers of food and beverages. During the Opening of Anuga on 7 October 2017, the Minister stated that she is convinced that as the joint platform of the food industry, Anuga can contribute towards further promoting the export and know-how transfer between the nations. 111 exhibitors from India are participating at the world's largest food fair.

Christina Schulze Föcking, Minister for Environmental Affairs, Agriculture, Nature and Consumer Protection of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, who opened the trade fair in the presence of numerous guests from the political and business circles, emphasised the significance of Anuga for the innovativeness and competence of the food industry. She stated that the appreciation for food has to grow further, as well as the appreciation for the sector, which also in North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the leading branches of industry.

On behalf of the German Association of the German Retail Grocery Trade (BVLH), the President Friedhelm Dornseifer welcomed the guests from Germany and abroad. "Anuga stands for the innovative power of the international food industry," he underlined. In this connection, he also addressed the digitalisation of the industry: "The new data-driven concepts and digital applications not only change the distribution, but also the procurement of goods and especially the customer communications." However, an extensively developed broadband network is also a prerequisite for the sustainable development of the food industry. "That is what I expect from the new Federal Government," stated Dornseifer.

"Cutting-edge technologies, qualified employees, a dynamic middle-class, an industry-specific research landscape and above all demanding consumers are the success factors of the industry," emphasised Dr. Wolfgang Ingold, President of the Federation of German Food and Drink Industries (BVE). "That Anuga is staged in Cologne underlines the significance of the EU and the German food industry for the international agricultural trade," added Ingold.

The video message by Phil Hogan, the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, also picked up on this. He emphasised the strength and competitiveness of the European food industry. And added that the industry clearly demonstrates these characteristics at Anuga.

Henriette Reker, the Mayoress of the City of Cologne and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Koelnmesse, was delighted about the record result of Anuga and about the many international guests, who "make our city even more colourful."

Over 7,400 companies from 107 countries are exhibiting at Anuga in Cologne from 7 to 11 October 2017. As such, the 34th Anuga is not only a record show, but is also underlining its position as the world's most important business platform for food and beverages.

Anuga is exclusively open to trade visitors.
