As the global spice industry grows increasingly competitive, ORIGINE continues to be a pioneer in responsible sourcing practices, placing quality, traceability, single origin, and sustainability at the core of its supply chains.
To better convey the unique character and origins of each of our spices, we have attributed a symbolic native Indonesian animal to each one — celebrating biodiversity and reinforcing the importance of protecting the ecosystems from which these products originate.
Macaque Vanilla: Single Origin from Indonesia
In the mid-1980s, François helped his father collect vanilla beans on the island of Bali. He immediately saw an opportunity to offer high-quality vanilla to restaurant owners in the United States, where he was living at the time.
Because of his deep connection to Indonesia, he aimed to create value at origin — not only for end consumers but also for farmers and workers across the supply chain. He understood that his close ties to the land and people, combined with technical expertise, would be key to making this vision a reality. Suparman, a vanilla farmer, explains:
“Every day I go to the farm to clear the land. I grow cloves, vanilla, and nutmeg. Before joining Tripper, I sold my harvest to middlemen and the prices were unpredictable. But after joining, I feel more motivated because the prices are clearer, and the field team truly supports us farmers.”
Dragon Cinnamon: A Stand for Authenticity in a Compromised Market
Sold under the name Dragon Cinnamon, our cinnamon stands for purity and transparency. The company exclusively offers 100% Cassia Cinnamon — single origin from Sumatra, Indonesia — and guarantees an organic, unadulterated product of the highest quality.
This sourcing approach is backed by certifications from the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) and the Rainforest Alliance. These standards ensure that cultivation does not encroach on protected forests or contribute to deforestation, while also promoting farming methods that protect local ecosystems and livelihoods.
At the heart of this approach lies a commitment to building long-term partnerships with farming communities. As Zarman, a cinnamon farmer from Sumatra, shares:
“My name is Zarman, a farmer from Sumatra. Every day I grow cinnamon and coffee. Before partnering with Tripper, selling cinnamon was difficult and often led to losses. Now, I earn better profits, receive free seedlings, attend trainings, and have learned how to farm sustainably without chemicals.”
Gorilla Cloves: Building a Transparent and Sustainable Supply Chain
The same dedication to integrity drives our work with Gorilla Cloves. Historically, the global clove trade has been marked by fragmented supply chains involving numerous intermediaries, often resulting in pesticide contamination, inconsistent quality, and adulteration.
In response, ORIGINE has developed a direct sourcing model for its Gorilla Cloves, working closely with a network of 350 farmers in the Selayar archipelago, part of Indonesia’s Sulawesi region. The gorilla was chosen as a symbol for this spice to reflect values of strength, respect, and guardianship — values we strive to uphold in our partnerships and environmental stewardship.
This integrated supply chain allows ORIGINE to maintain close oversight at every stage of production. Our 35 field officers inspect, guide, and share knowledge on best agricultural practices. Drying is conducted in our own facilities under strictly controlled conditions, ensuring cloves that are consistently safe and of high quality.
The impact on local farming communities has been significant. As Andi, a clove farmer from Sulawesi, testifies:
“Every day I go to the farm to clean the land where I grow clove, vanilla, and nutmeg. Before I joined PT Tripper, I just planted without knowing the real price, and local buyers often gave unfair prices. But after joining, everything changed. We learned better farming methods, and now my harvest is better and I get a good, fair price. I feel more respected as a farmer.”
