Fruttagel: Innovation, Sustainability, and Quality in Italian fruit and vegetable industrial processing

Fruttagel is an Italian agricultural cooperative company founded in 1994, specialized in the industrial processing of fresh fruit and vegetables, tomatoes, cereals, and legumes from integrated and organic farming into finished products; intended for retail operators, food service, door-to-door distribution, and the food industry. Around 80% of production is dedicated to private label. In 2024, product sales generated a revenue of approximately €156,000,000.

The company brings together 12 Italian agricultural cooperatives from the Emilia-Romagna and Molise regions, 7 of which supply raw materials for processing. These cooperatives, in turn, bring together hundreds of growers. Fruttagel owns and manages two production and packaging facilities: one in Alfonsine, in the province of Ravenna and one in Larino, in the province of Campobasso. Thanks to the strategic location of these plants—one in Northern and one in Southern Italy—Fruttagel can source fresh products directly from growing areas, located as close as possible to its industrial processing sites. All agricultural raw materials are cultivated according to integrated production guidelines, for which the company has obtained an important certification. Fruttagel's logistics network is supported by five storage warehouses, two of which are fully automated. The company currently employs 823 people, 70% of whom are women, who play an active role in the company’s ongoing development and growth.

Fruttagel markets its finished products under its three core brands: Almaverde Bio, Sucor, and Il Giardino dei Sapori. Each brand represents one or more product categories, including: frozen vegetables, nectars, juices and fruit beverages, plant-based beverages, and tomato derivatives.

Almaverde Bio is a consortium of companies based in the Emilia-Romagna region, of which Fruttagel is a founding member. It is also recognized as the first organic brand, that appeared in Italy. This year, the brand celebrates its 25th anniversary, offering only high-quality Made in Italy products. Fruttagel’s Almaverde Bio product range includes tomato passata and pulp, frozen vegetables, fruit nectars and no added sugar fruit beverages. The tomato passata and pulp are made from organically grown tomatoes and are available in 700 g glass bottles or in the convenient and innovative 390 g Tetra Recart® packaging. The frozen organic vegetables are packaged in compostable bags certified OK compost by TÜV AUSTRIA, available in 450 g package for retail and 2500 g for the food service channel. The range also includes vegetable mixes and creamy soups, without added seasoning, allowing consumers to flavor according to their preferences. Given Fruttagel’s particular attention to sustainable packaging, as well as to the product itself, even the fruit nectars and the fruit beverages (no added sugars) come in recyclable packages, predominantly made of paper. The nectars are available in Tetra Brik® Crystal packs (3 x 200 ml), while the fruit beverages come in 1000 ml Tetra Prisma® cartons or 200 ml glass bottles.

Sucor focuses primarily on frozen vegetables and mixed side dishes, both natural and some grilled, along with a variety of vegetable soup mixes. For the retail trade, products are available in bags ranging from 450 g to 1000 g, depending on the product type. For food service and catering, the company offers also battered frozen vegetables available in 1000 g or 2500 g packages. The range also includes frozen and minced aromatic herbs, such as basil, onion, garlic, and parsley, available in various sizes from 50 g to 300 g. The “season mix” variety is also offered in 1000 g bags specifically for the food service distributive channel.

Il Giardino dei Sapori offers a wide range of products, including tomato passatas, fruit nectars, 100% fruit juices, fruit soft drinks (zero added sugar), and a plant-based soy beverage. The tomato passatas, made from raw materials grown using integrated farming methods, are available in 700 g glass bottles, in a carton multipack (3 x 200 g), and also in 500 g or 1000 g single carton with a resealable cap, for practical and versatile use. The fruit nectars (apricot, peach, and pear flavors) are made from selected Italian fruit, processed at the Alfonsine plant, and are available in a carton multipack (3 x 200 ml) and a 1000 ml single carton with a resealable cap.
The range is completed with 100% fruit juices (orange and pineapple flavors) in 1000 ml carton with a resealable cap, and fruit soft drinks (zero added sugar) designed for the food service in a 1500 ml carton, available in ACE and Tropical flavors. The line also includes caffeine-free lemon tea and a plant-based soy drink, suitable for all, available in 1000 ml carton with a resealable cap.

Fruttagel’s business model integrates and enhances all stages of the supply chain — from field to distribution — to deliver products that retain all the properties of the fresh products. The company’s commitment is to provide consumers with food that upholds the highest standards of authenticity, safety, and quality. To safeguard consumer health and ensure fair practices in food production and trade, Fruttagel guarantees full product traceability throughout the entire production process and performs rigorous sampling plans for each type of vegetable processed. The company’s aim is to create value for all players in the agro-industrial supply chain: members, farmers, customers, and end consumers, by enhancing efficiency and competitiveness through a qualified presence at every stage of the process.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of Fruttagel’s philosophy, reflected in a concrete and wide-ranging commitment. The company firmly believes that true development is only achievable when economic growth goes hand in hand with social inclusion, environmental protection, and cultural advancement. This commitment begins at the very roots of the supply chain: Fruttagel carefully selects growing areas, favoring territories traditionally known for cultivating high-quality vegetables and fruit. Special attention is dedicated to organic farming and the use of eco-friendly packaging solutions. For beverages and tomato derivatives, Fruttagel primarily uses Tetra Pak® packaging — largely composed of paper from responsibly managed sources. Since 2021, Fruttagel has adopted the Tetra Brik® Crystal (200 ml) single-serve format, known for its reduced environmental impact. Among the latest sustainable innovations is the frozen product packaging, certified as OK Compost in line with UNI EN 13432:2002 by TÜV AUSTRIA. On the infrastructure front, the company has its own wastewater treatment plant, which enables the recovery and reuse of water (after being filtered and sanitized). In addition, the installation of a cogeneration plant helps meet part of the facility’s energy needs, both in terms of electricity and heat, while also contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions. Overall, Fruttagel has set clear goals to continually improve its environmental performance, aiming to strike a balance between sustainability and cost efficiency.

Fruttagel is also actively engaged in addressing the issue of food waste. As part of this ongoing effort, the company supports the “Spreco Zero 2024” (Zero waste) Campaign through the “Sprecometro” project — a digital application developed by the Waste Watcher International Observatory. The app calculates individual food waste in grams, encouraging more conscious consumption and the adoption of healthier, more sustainable diets. Fruttagel has also partnered for years with Too Good To Go, a collaboration that transforms surplus food into a resource, effectively reducing waste. To date, this partnership has saved 28.68 tons of food, equivalent to the CO₂ emissions of 171 Milan–Rome flights — a result that shows the power of responsibility, cooperation, and sustainability, values at the heart of Fruttagel's identity.

Fruttagel’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and work ethics is supported and validated by numerous national and international product and system certifications.

Product certifications:  BRC-IFS Food (Global standard for food safety), Made in Italy, Integrated production certification, OK COMPOST by TÜV AUSTRIA and Fair Trade (for fruit juices).

System certifications: UNI EN ISO 9001, SMETA-SEDEX, ISO 45001, ISO 14001.
