The blue MSC ecolabel for seafood certified as ecologically sustainable is widely known among consumers. But what about the certification program and standards that underlie the label? The immense diversity of fishing operations around the globe poses significant challenges to standard setters in this field: Strict, standardised, and objective criteria are needed to evaluate impacts consistently across very different contexts. What is more, there are "standards for standards" that tell us what makes for a trustworthy, transparent, and efficient certification programme - and what does not. This talk wants to offer a glimpse into the fascinating but complex world of seafood sustainability certification and introduce the fundamentals of the MSC program.
