The BMI Bayerische Milchindustrie cooperative, founded in 1952 and based in Landshut, currently comprises 29 milk supply cooperatives, dairies and financing members. As one of Germany's leading dairy companies, BMI processes 900 million kilograms of milk and over two billion kilograms of whey every year across its seven production sites in Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt. 49 percent of the goods are exported. BMI is one of the largest whey powder manufacturers in Germany, with fresh products and cheese also being key products. Customers include food retailers, the processing industry and specialist wholesalers. The company employs more than 1,000 people and generates an annual turnover of approximately EUR 665 million (2020).
